The Summit is one of the most thrilling collaborations ever assembled, as two iconic vocal groups, with twenty Grammy Awards between them, have joined forces and toured for the past few years, not just as co-bills content to sing separate sets, but performing nearly a dozen songs together that feature the tightest harmonies known in the music business, as well as innovative arrangements and funky grooves in one inspirationally fluid ninety-minute set without intermission. The PBS series Soundstage broadcast The Summit concert experience last year nationwide.
The Manhattan Transfer continues in its fourth lineup to set the high bar as one of the world’s most powerful and innovative four-part harmony groups since its founding 47 years ago by Tim Hauser (1941-2014). Beginning with their first performances in the 1970s, these members of the Vocal Hall of Fame have become cornerstones of contemporary music, known for their amazing category defying versatility, and incorporating pop, jazz, R&B, rock and roll, swing, symphonic, and a cappella music. Just a few “peaks” in the quartet’s over 30 albums include Extensions, Mecca for Moderns, S/T, Brazil, Pastiche and Vocalese with 12 Grammy nominations in 1985, the most in that award’s history.
Take 6—six virtuosic voices united in clear harmonies against a backdrop of syncopated rhythms that bubble into an intoxicating brew of gospel, jazz, R&B, and pop—are recognized as the world’s pre-eminent a capella group or, as Quincy Jones calls them, “the baddest vocal cats on the planet.” From its first critically acclaimed and awarded eponymous release in 1988 to its most recent (2018) sixteenth album Iconic, Take 6 has remained the original torchbearer ensemble able to carry such classics as Louis Armstrong’s What A Wonderful World, Ladysmith Black Mambazo hits, Ben E. King’s Stand By Me and Woody Guthrie’s This Land Is Your Land to new heights beyond any music genre borders. The sextet has come a long way from their days at Huntsville, Alabama’s Oakwood College where McKnight formed the group originally named The Gentleman’s Estate Quartet in 1980, followed by Sounds of Distinction, then Alliance and, in 1987, Take 6.
